Are You Able to Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped our Contemporary Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, however, that title should go to a automated sawmill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest trading ship necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced within a week.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical saw, that converted timber into boards using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic and artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted its rotary motion into vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward a measured step each stroke.
“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each descending stroke while advancing with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”
