Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
