The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Following Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit established by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments
For the past four years, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the city as winter sets in.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected local government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".
Court Verdict and Implementation
Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, judges approved the proposal, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated hours throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Numerous recording stations throughout the capital registered contamination spiking around late evening to the most severe levels recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants coming from India following the events.
Persistent Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Various Pollution Sources
The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air arrives.
Medical and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in Delhi.
