Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame through this autobiographical spoof. This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a continuation. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the youth anxious. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a basement, he anticipates the worst. Yet the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
