Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
