Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
